So it’s been quite awhile since any of us have posted here. We’re sorry for the long absence. We’ll try to get back on the ball and give you guys the kind of content you’ve all come to know and love from us. With that said, I had this thought to do this list last Friday as a sort of tribute to Sports Games which is one of my favorite video game categories. So without further adieu, here’s the list!
*Note, if there isn’t a team mentioned, it’s more because I’ve never played the game thoroughly as opposed to just leaving it out. For instance, Bo Jackson and his TechmoBowl team will not be on this list.
10. Glen Rice’s Miami Heat (NBA JAM Tournament Edition SNES)
If you ask anyone who knows me, they know how much I love this game. NBA Jam is such a great game and Glen Rice made it that much better. Now, I said Glen Rice and Co. because look at this picture…HAROLD MINER?! That’s my swing man? So needless to say, this was a one man wrecking crew. All you have to do is run down the court, spot up for the three, make it, set to steal, shoot the three. Rinse and repeat. 120 points later, you sit there and wonder what the hell happened to you. Glen Rice could only be slowed down by one person in that game…If they somehow made a code that put Sarah Palin in the game. Yeah, I went there.
9. Seattle Mariners (Ken Griffey Jr. Major League Baseball SNES)
The kid, Ken Griffey Jr., in his absolute prime. This game was disgusting playing against the Mariners. They had Griff, a young ARod, and a hard throwing, 120 MPH throwing Bold Lightning (really Randy Johnson but those pesky naming rights…). If you threw in the strike zone to #24, forget about it. Moon shot. My cousin loved playing with them….Coincidentally he won a lot….
8. LA Lakers (NBA Live 2005 PS2)
The starting lineup for this team…Shaq, Kobe, Payton, Malone, Fox. Game over.
7. North Carolina State Wolfpack (NCAA Football 2006 PS2)
So let me just go on record and say, this is easily one of the best sports games I’ve ever played. This game was perfect in every way. Top to bottom. It is my favorite game in the NCAA series. So some of you are asking why this NC State team? Well if you ask a couple of my friends who felt their bite personally, you’d know that this team shouldn’t be trifled against. Quick back story, I saw NC State play Ohio State roughly 8-9 years ago when Philip Rivers was at QB and they almost knocked off a top 5 OSU in Raleigh. From that point on, I was a fan of the program. Fast forward to this year. They had 2 DEs that were unstoppable….Senior. Manny Lawson, and Junior phenom, Mario Williams….You’ve heard of that 2nd guy before, right? On offense, this WR named Brian Clark, stole the show and would catch absolutely everything thrown his way. Such a great game….
6. USC Trojans (NCAA Football 2006 PS2)
There were a lot of dominant USC teams in this series but this team definitely gets the nod because of one player. Reggie Bush. If you’ve never seen this video… just know, it’s ridiculous.
5. Philadelphia Eagles (ESPN 2K5 PS2)
I am a pretty big Donovan McNabb fan. I am also a big Terrell Owens fan. Put them together and you have one of the biggest offensive scoring machines in NFL history. This 2K team was dominant but it’s not the best in the series. T.O. really couldn’t be covered in this game and when you have a Donovan McNabb that can scamper and make time for T.O. downfield, it’s a lethal combination.
4. Clemson Tigers (NCAA Football 2009)
A return to form for the series and is easily the best of the NCAA’s on the next gen console. This team was LOADED at every position. Their RBs were Mike Davis (who never fumbled), and C.J. Spiller, one of the most explosive players in this game’s history. I had Spiller and other speedster, Jacoby Ford, running back kickoffs (soooo many returns that year). On defense I had Da’Quan Bowers and Ricky Sapp who were always mismatched by offensive linemen who couldn’t guard both of them on every down and I might have racked up 2,000 sacks in that game. I was also notorious for playing this game online ALL THE TIME. I think I ended up playing 300+ online games. Also, Aaron Kelly at WR is easily one of the most underused WRs ever.
3. Texas Longhorns (NCAA Football 2006 PS2)
The 3rd and final mention of this game on this list, the Longhorn team that would go on to win a national championship that year. As unstoppable as Reggie Bush was in this game, Vince Young was all that and more. Here in Austin, we all grew so tired of playing against Vince that we outlawed the use of them in head to head games.
2. Minnesota Vikings (NFL 2K Dreamcast)
I was a GameDay fan back in the 90’s. I parlayed that into a Madden love from 2003 onward and really only enjoyed 2K5 in this series. This real hate for this series started with the very first one. My friend introduced this game to me. Randy Moss and Randall Cunningham were simply UNSTOPPABLE. The problem with the 2K series is the number of dropped passes from everyone on the field. Even top notch players were constantly dropping the ball and it was so aggravating. But not Randy Moss. Randy could do no wrong. It was such a lopsided affair. This performance can only be rivaled by the #1 team…….
1. Atlanta Falcons (Madden 2004 PS2)
Ok, a show of hands for anyone who has gotten beat on a broken Michael Vick play in this game. Everyone? Sounds about right. Vick and the Falcons weren’t the best team talent wise in this game, but they were somehow the best team to walk the planet because of number 7. Simply put. Mike Vick torched users by running in circles for 20 minutes, then cutting up field for 70 yards and a touchdown without breaking a sweat. This game was broken from jump because of it and when one of your friends decided to be an ass and pick the Falcons, you knew you either needed to start praying or pick the Ravens and try to run him over with Ray Lewis. Those were your only options. The only thing that made playing Vick tolerable was his tendency to fumble. This offensive explosion in the Madden series lead to Madden 2005 and the invention of the hit stick.
Well that will do it for this list, I hope you guys enjoyed reliving some of these moments with me. It was fun looking back at all these teams.
